Managing Food Allergens - a workshop for local authority enforcement officers
Aims and objectives
This is a one day course for local authority regulators (both environmental health and trading standards) and will provide information in a workshop format about practical enforcement relating to the Food Information for Consumers Regulations (EU 1169/2011) (FIRs) which came into force in December 2014, and the associated guidance.
It will provide practical information about allergen management for pre-packed and non-prepacked food in catering, manufacturing and retail settings, signposting enforcement issues and current enforcement policy (which are dealt with in more detail by other FSA training courses). Through practical exercises and case studies, it will give confidence in helping food businesses comply through advice and education.
At the end of the course delegates will:
- Understand the requirements of the FIRs and how food businesses in different sectors can comply;
- Recognise how to incorporate allergen management into Food Safety Management Systems (HACCP principles)
- Confidently identify compliance during inspections and investigations, and be able to use educative and advisory approaches to drive business compliance
- Understand how sampling and analysis can be used in allergen management
Why should you attend?
The course will briefly outline the main changes introduced by the regulations and the enforcement responsibilities for local authorities.
The workshop will be participative, and delegates will be expected to actively contribute to discussions with their experiences, expertise and views, including giving feedback as part of group discussions.
Completion of the course and applying it to day to day work will help ensure consistent and professional approaches by enforcement officers across the country, and provide confidence and reassurance to businesses.

Important notes for delegates
Delegates should be familiar with the general concepts and issues relating to food allergens and the requirements of the Food Information Regulations, and should have undertaken the FSA e-learning training prior to attendance, and must also complete the pre-course online survey.
Please note that EHPs wanting detailed information on the FIRs, formal enforcement action (such as serving statutory notices, taking prosecutions) and formal sampling etc. may prefer to attend alternative FSA courses.
Some delegates may attend the course expecting the trainer to resolve a specific enforcement problem. However, whilst the course is intended to cover general principles and help broader understanding, it is not intended to provide detailed enforcement solutions out of context.
